It is a tradition in our family that all children should have their very own hand made quilt. In addition to the much loved "blankie" that I still have 56 years later from my own childhood, I have a beautiful hand stitched wedding ring quilt made by my Grandmother out of scraps of old dresses and shirts. My daughter and niece both have wonderful appliqued quilts from the same talented woman. My own mother has made a myriad of quilts for her children, grandchildren & children of friends. So, it is now a tradition that I, and my daughter, happily carry on.
I always like to customize the quilts to the personality of the parents (and newly arrived) and their theme. I have made quilts with martial arts themes, lilies, butterflies, ladybugs, dinosaurs, cars, sailboats & even predators (albeit really cute ones). The latest creation is for my daughter's best friend, who is anticipating the arrival of her son any day now. The theme for the young lad's room is Sea Creatures... so this is my contribution... welcome to the world Mickey!
I loved the idea of the layers of the ocean, going from dark blues to lighter blues and ending on the top with fluffy waves. I used a variety of designers for the quilt including Free Spirit dapples, Victoria & Albert, Free Spirit pinwheels, David Walker, Free Spirit solids & George Mendoza. The fish applique's are fussy cut from Brandon Mably's Shoal design in green.
It is such an inspiration to walk into the "fabric room" at Flying Bulldogs, my biggest problem is deciding which of the thousands of incredible designs to use. I think it took me as long to decide which fabrics to use as it did to make the quilt! I can't wait for the next baby announcement so that I can get started on a new one!
We would love to showcase your quilts and sewing projects as well. Please contact me by email and we can work on a posting together!
