Re-caning an antique rocking chair with self made twine

Re-caning an antique rocking chair with self made twine

19th Feb 2015

I had this incredible antique Danish Modern rocking chair for several decades. It was well used and well loved... so very comfortable. But, as you can see, it was definitely worse for the wear after so many years. The rush on the chair was wearing through and the weaving was coming apart.

So, being the ambitious person that I am, I had the bright idea that I would re-cane the chair myself. I wanted a little more color in the room, so I decided that I would make my own twine using this really great Brandon Mably fabric.. Ripple in purple.

I cut about 15 yds of fabric into 1" strips and started twisting... and twisting... and twisting... and twisting....Then, I twisted 2 of the individual pieces together, so the finished twine was two strips twisted together. This part takes a LOT of patience and a LOT of time.

My project took me more than a year, and many, many blisters!

But.... take a look at the results!

Unfortunately, we are out of stock on the purple colorway, but have this pattern in other colors and several other patterns from the same collection that would work great for a project of your own. The best news is that they are currently on clearance!
